The problems encountered due to legalized gambling
Regulating gambling is foreseen by some as a significant importance in protecting a gambler from being cheated by the numerous gambling institutions that exist. Legalized gambling is a way of leaving mobsters and racketeers who run gambling intuitions powerless from committing crimes that enable them to carry on their illegal activities. By legalizing gambling games, there is also a chance of government officials and state officials from bring involved in bribery and corruption by taking pay offs by the bosses of these institutions. Crime can not be stopped if gambling was legalized as there will always be extortionists, prostitutes, money launderers and loan sharks who will frequent these establishments.
Some of the social benefits that legalized gambling brings is increased revenues, employment and charity funding. But there are also hidden economic costs such as tax payers’ money being spent to cure persons who have become addicted to gambling. Gambling has brought about an alarming increase of people becoming addicted to it. Some people argue that by legalizing a gambling game, people who had never gambled before will do so as they would not have to fear being prosecuted by the law if they are caught. This would also open the doorway to new compulsive gamblers.
Some compulsive gamblers who find themselves bankrupt and homeless will even go to the extent of committing suicide. Such a problem will not go away because of legalized gambling. In fact, the suicide rate would increase because more and more people would be involved in gambling. It does not matter what form of gambling you choose and whether it is legalized gambling or not. If you dig into your savings when placing your bets and continue to play even when you are on a losing streak, you can be assured that you will be in the same path as other compulsive gamblers.
